Vancouver Whitecaps turned clinical finishing into a commanding 4–1 victory over San Diego FC at BC Place on Wednesday, October 28, with four different players finding the net in the MLS Western Conference fixture.

Aleksa Cvetković opened the scoring in the 24th minute and Brian White doubled the advantage in the 41st. Ryan Gauld added a third in the 66th before Bruno Caicedo made it four in the 76th. Onni Valakari’s 83rd-minute reply denied Vancouver a clean sheet, while Rayan Elloumi’s stoppage-time dismissal supplied a late blemish on an otherwise emphatic evening for the hosts.

Vancouver build a decisive first-half lead

San Diego finished with the greater share of possession, but Vancouver made their attacking moments count. Cvetković provided the breakthrough after 24 minutes, putting the Whitecaps on course for a productive night in front of goal.

The advantage became considerably more comfortable shortly before the interval. White headed home in the 41st minute, sending Vancouver into half-time with a 2–0 lead and leaving the visitors facing a substantial recovery job.

Gauld and Caicedo put the result beyond reach

Any hopes of a San Diego comeback suffered another blow in the 66th minute, when Gauld’s header stretched the lead to three. Vancouver then added their fourth through substitute Caicedo in the 76th, underlining the spread of their attacking threat.

Valakari, also introduced from the bench, headed in for San Diego in the 83rd minute. It was a consolation rather than the start of a revival, with the Whitecaps’ earlier work having already established a decisive cushion.

There was still an unwelcome late twist for Vancouver. Elloumi was booked in the first minute of added time and shown a red card in the fourth, leaving the hosts to finish with 10 players.

Finishing makes the difference

The attacking numbers offered a useful explanation of the result. San Diego held 56.1% possession and attempted 20 shots to Vancouver’s 16, yet the Whitecaps put 10 efforts on target compared with the visitors’ seven. Vancouver also won eight corners to San Diego’s three.

More of the ball and more attempts did not translate into a closer contest for San Diego. Vancouver’s sharper return in front of goal proved decisive, with two goals in each half delivering a convincing three points.
