Gotham FC 1-1 Portland Thorns FC finished level at Red Bull Arena on Friday night, as Jaedyn Shaw’s second-half opener was cancelled out by a composed Sophia Wilson penalty in a compelling NWSL fixture.
Neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval, despite Gotham controlling the ball for long stretches. The hosts finished with 73.6% possession and four corners, but Portland remained a threat when they found opportunities to break forward.
Shaw breaks the deadlock
The match finally sparked into life in the 60th minute when Jaedyn Shaw scored for Gotham FC, giving the home side a lead their territorial control had been building towards. Gotham registered 12 shots overall, with five on target, but could not turn their advantage on the ball into a second goal.
Portland, meanwhile, carried plenty of attacking intent despite seeing far less possession. The Thorns produced 17 shots and forced six efforts on target, ensuring Gotham could never settle fully after taking the lead.
Wilson delivers from the spot
The visitors found their equaliser in the 75th minute. Sophia Wilson scored from the penalty spot to bring Portland level at 1-1, rewarding the Thorns’ persistent attacking output and setting up a tense closing spell in Harrison.
There was no late winner, although the match remained combative through nine minutes of stoppage time. Portland’s Nina Nijstad was booked in the 43rd minute, M.A. Vignola saw yellow in the 90th minute, and Gotham’s Midge Purce was cautioned in the 90th minute.
In front of 10,379 supporters, both teams had to settle for a point from a match in which Gotham dictated possession while Portland matched them with a greater volume of shots. Gotham FC next face Denver Summit FC on Sunday, September 6, while Portland Thorns FC travel to Washington Spirit later that day.
