Vancouver Whitecaps turned a halftime deficit into three away points on Saturday, October 17, beating Austin FC 2-1 at Q2 Stadium in Major League Soccer. Myrto Uzuni put the hosts ahead in the 40th minute, but Ryan Gauld’s header in the 47th and Yadaly Diaby’s decisive strike in the 71st completed the turnaround.
Uzuni gives Austin the halftime advantage
Austin found the breakthrough five minutes before the interval, with Myrto Uzuni striking in the 40th minute to establish a 1-0 lead. It gave the hosts an advantage to protect heading into the dressing room, although Vancouver would need little time after the restart to erase it.
The Whitecaps had already picked up two bookings, with Andrés Cubas cautioned in the 13th minute and Tristan Blackmon following in the 36th. Neither prevented the visitors from producing the second-half response that decided this Western Conference fixture.
Gauld and Diaby turn the match around
Ryan Gauld headed Vancouver level in the 47th minute, immediately undoing Austin’s work before the break. With parity restored just two minutes into the second half, the contest was back in the balance.
The decisive moment arrived in the 71st minute, when substitute Yadaly Diaby put the Whitecaps ahead. His goal completed the comeback and left Austin needing an equaliser to salvage a draw.
That equaliser never came. Gauld received a yellow card in the 90th minute, but Vancouver retained their advantage through stoppage time to secure the 2-1 victory.
Vancouver make their chances count
The visitors finished with 53.9 percent possession, a 10-9 edge in total attempts and six corners to Austin’s four. Yet Austin registered more shots on target, leading that measure 5-3. Vancouver’s ability to turn two of their three efforts on target into goals proved decisive.
For Austin, a promising halftime position ended in frustration. For the Whitecaps, the quick equaliser and Diaby’s winner delivered a second half worth all three points.
