Four first-half goals, two San Diego FC comebacks and a point apiece: LA Galaxy’s California clash with San Diego finished 2–2 at Dignity Health Sports Park on Saturday, October 17.

João Klauss opened the scoring in the fourth minute and Erik Thommy restored the Galaxy’s advantage in the 17th, either side of Anders Dreyer’s 10th-minute penalty. Gabriel Pirani brought San Diego level again in the 39th minute, completing the scoring before a goalless second half.

Galaxy strike early, San Diego respond twice

The Galaxy wasted little time establishing a foothold, with Klauss finding the net after just four minutes. Their early lead lasted only six minutes, however, as Dreyer converted from the penalty spot in the 10th minute to make it 1–1.

Thommy put the hosts back in front in the 17th minute, giving the Galaxy a second advantage inside a lively opening spell. Once again, San Diego found an answer. Pirani’s 39th-minute equalizer ensured the visitors went into halftime level at 2–2.

Possession meets shooting threat

Neither side could find a decisive fifth goal after the interval, despite a match that offered contrasting measures of attacking threat.

San Diego controlled 68.6 percent of possession and edged the total shot count 14–12. The Galaxy, meanwhile, registered nine shots on target to the visitors’ five despite having just 31.4 percent of the ball. The hosts also led the corner count 5–3.

Those numbers underline why possession alone did not tell the whole story. San Diego enjoyed far more of the ball, but the Galaxy produced the greater number of efforts on target. Ultimately, neither approach yielded a second-half breakthrough, and the draw stood.

What comes next?

The Galaxy will rue surrendering the lead twice, while San Diego leave Carson with a point earned through two first-half responses.

San Diego next host Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, October 24, at 7:30 p.m. PDT. The Galaxy return to action against LAFC on Sunday, October 25, at 6 p.m. PDT.
