Preston Judd’s 70th-minute header brought the San Jose Earthquakes back on level terms as they drew 1-1 with Nashville SC at PayPal Park on Saturday, October 17. Hany Mukhtar had given the visitors a 34th-minute lead, but San Jose recovered after the interval to earn a share of the points in this Major League Soccer fixture.
Mukhtar gives Nashville the advantage
Nashville struck first through Mukhtar in the 34th minute, establishing a lead they carried into halftime. The visitors finished the match with 53.1 percent possession and proved more accurate with their shooting, putting four of their six attempts on target.
San Jose, meanwhile, went into the break with both Beau Leroux and Judd on yellow cards. Leroux was cautioned in the 39th minute, with Judd booked three minutes into first-half stoppage time. Nashville’s Shakur Mohammed had received the opening caution in the 28th minute.
Judd heads San Jose level
The Earthquakes found their response in the 70th minute when Judd headed home to make it 1-1. His equalizer left 20 minutes of regulation time for either side to find a winner, but neither could produce a decisive second goal.
San Jose finished with a 14-6 advantage in total attempts and won all four of the match’s corners. Yet only two of the hosts’ efforts were on target, a contrast that helps explain why their greater shooting volume did not translate into victory.
Ian Harkes received San Jose’s third yellow card in the 90th minute, and the fixture ended level after three minutes of second-half stoppage time. Nashville had led at the interval; San Jose supplied the only goal after it, leaving each side with a point.
