PORTLAND, Ore. — Sophia Wilson’s 44th-minute goal proved the difference as Portland Thorns FC claimed a hard-fought 1-0 National Women’s Soccer League victory over Denver Summit FC on Saturday night at Providence Park.
In front of 22,017 supporters, Portland made its decisive move just before the interval. Wilson found the breakthrough in the 44th minute, giving the Thorns a 1-0 half-time lead and a margin they protected through a tense, scoreless second half.
Denver enjoyed more of the ball, finishing with 62.5 percent possession, and earned seven corners to Portland’s three. But the visitors could not turn that territorial control into an equaliser. Portland’s defensive organisation held firm, limiting Denver to three shots on target despite 12 attempts overall.
The Thorns were more direct and more productive with their opportunities, registering 16 shots and putting six on target.
