Brentford delivered a ruthless Premier League performance to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium, turning a compact and incisive display into an emphatic opening-day victory.
The Bees struck twice before half-time through Keane Lewis-Potter in the 12th minute and Vitaly Janelt in the 33rd, before Michael Kayode added a third in the 49th minute to put the fixture beyond Spurs’ reach.
Tottenham had more of the ball, finishing with 59.1% possession, but Brentford were far sharper where it mattered. The home side repeatedly found ways to break forward with purpose, producing 26 shots and eight on target compared with Spurs’ nine attempts and four on target.
Lewis-Potter’s 12th-minute goal gave Brentford the fast start the Gtech crowd demanded, while Janelt’s finish 21 minutes later capitalised on a disjointed Tottenham display. Conor Gallagher was booked a minute after the second goal as Spurs struggled to regain control of a match increasingly being played on Brentford’s terms.
Any prospect of an away response disappeared shortly after the interval. Kayode struck in the 49th minute to make it 3-0, rewarding another decisive Brentford move and leaving Tottenham with a mountain too steep to climb.
Brentford did not simply protect their advantage. They continued to compete fiercely, won seven corners, and restricted their visitors to limited clear openings despite Tottenham’s territorial control. Janelt was shown a yellow card in the 78th minute, but it did little to disrupt an assured home performance in front of 17,180 supporters.
The result gives Brentford an ideal start to their league campaign and adds substance to the growing sense that Spurs were punished for a sloppy afternoon. Brentford next travel to Leeds United on August 30, while Tottenham will look for a response against Newcastle United on August 29.
