Atlanta United FC earned a valuable 2-1 road victory over Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field on Wednesday night, with Tristan Muyumba’s 78th-minute goal settling a tense MLS contest in Saint Paul.
Minnesota saw more of the ball and produced more attempts, finishing with 53.3 percent possession, 13 shots and six corners. But Atlanta were more clinical in the decisive moments, converting two of their three efforts on target to leave with all three points.
Jacob gives Atlanta the first-half edge
The opening stages were competitive and increasingly physical, with Atlanta’s Júnior Alonso booked in the 18th minute before Minnesota’s Michael Boxall and Joaquín Pereyra went into the book in the 29th and 32nd minutes.
Atlanta broke through in the 37th minute when Tomás Jacob found the net to give the visitors a 1-0 half-time lead. The goal gave Atlanta a platform to defend compactly and look for opportunities in transition, despite Minnesota’s greater share of possession.
Markanich responds before Muyumba delivers
Minnesota came out with purpose after the interval and restored parity in the 58th minute. Anthony Markanich rose to head home, making it 1-1 and bringing Allianz Field to life.
The Loons continued to press, but Atlanta absorbed the pressure and found the defining moment 12 minutes from time. Tristan Muyumba struck in the 78th minute to put Atlanta back in front, and the visitors managed the closing stages effectively despite Minnesota’s push for a second equaliser.
Tomás Chancalay was cautioned for Atlanta in the 75th minute, while Minnesota’s Owen Gene received a yellow card in the 87th as the match remained fiercely contested until the final whistle. Both sides committed 13 fouls in an even, combative encounter.
