HARRISON, N.J. — Gotham FC made their first-half edge count on Friday night, with Jaedyn Shaw scoring in the 44th minute to secure a 1-0 National Women’s Soccer League victory over San Diego Wave FC at Red Bull Arena.
The contest was finely balanced for much of the opening period, but Gotham found the decisive moment just before the interval. Shaw’s goal gave the hosts a 1-0 half-time lead and ultimately proved enough to separate two competitive sides.
Gotham controlled more of the ball, finishing with 56.4 percent possession, and produced the greater attacking volume with 15 shots to San Diego’s nine. The home side also created 12 shot-assist situations and won three corners, consistently asking questions of the Wave back line.
San Diego remained firmly in the fixture after the break and matched Gotham with three shots on target, but the visitors could not find the equaliser. Gotham’s defensive work held up through a scoreless second half and into five minutes of stoppage time to protect the narrow advantage.
The result extends Gotham’s strong league form, with the hosts improving their overall record to 12-4-3. San Diego, now 10-2-7, will rue an opportunity missed after keeping the match close despite seeing less of the possession.
In the end, Shaw’s 44th-minute finish was the defining moment: one clinical intervention before half-time, followed by a composed, resilient second-half display from Gotham.
