St. Louis CITY SC and Real Salt Lake had to settle for a point apiece after a tightly contested 1-1 Major League Soccer draw at Energizer Park on Saturday night.
After a goalless first half marked by competitive midfield battles and five yellow cards, the fixture opened up after the interval. Real Salt Lake struck first in the 60th minute through Sergi Solans, who gave the visitors a crucial lead against the run of St. Louis pressure.
St. Louis had controlled much of the ball and continued to push forward, eventually finding a deserved equaliser in the 72nd minute. Marcel Hartel delivered the decisive response, bringing CITY SC level and ensuring the home side had something to show for an assertive attacking performance.
The statistics reflected St. Louis’ territorial advantage. CITY SC held 66.9 percent possession, attempted 20 shots to Real Salt Lake’s eight, and won nine corners. However, Real Salt Lake remained disciplined and efficient without the ball, limiting the hosts to four shots on target while registering three of their own.
Neither side could find a late winner, despite St. Louis continuing to probe in the final stages. Real Salt Lake’s defensive work earned them a valuable away result, while CITY SC will take encouragement from their response after falling behind.
The draw leaves St. Louis CITY SC with a 7-5-6 league record, while Real Salt Lake move to 8-3-6. In an evenly balanced Western Conference contest, Solans’ 60th-minute opener and Hartel’s 72nd-minute equaliser ensured the points were shared.
