Gotham FC claimed a hard-earned 1-0 National Women’s Soccer League victory over the Houston Dash at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday, with Sam Kerr’s 46th-minute goal proving the difference.
After a goalless opening half, Gotham found the breakthrough immediately after the restart. Sam Kerr struck in the 46th minute, turning a tightly contested fixture in the visitors’ favor and giving Gotham a lead they would not relinquish.
Houston had opportunities to respond in front of 7,512 supporters, registering 13 shots and seven efforts on target. But the Dash could not find a finish to match their pressure, despite earning five corners and producing seven shot assists.
Gotham controlled more of the ball with 60.4 percent possession, though they were made to work for every inch by a determined Houston side. The opening period had been even in the scoreline, with Lisa Boattin booked in the fourth minute, before Kerr’s early second-half intervention separated the teams.
Houston continued to push through a lengthy stoppage-time finish, while Clarissa Larisey was shown a yellow card in the 90th minute. Gotham, however, held their defensive shape to see out the clean sheet and take all three points.
The result improves Gotham FC’s league record to 11-4-3, while Houston Dash fall to 5-4-8. For Gotham, Kerr’s 46th-minute finish was the decisive moment in a disciplined away performance.
