Manchester United sealed third place in the Premier League on Sunday with a lively 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford, surviving two Forest rallies in a fixture that never quite settled. Early control, a chaotic spell after the interval and late tension made for a proper end-of-season spectacle in Manchester.

United were in front after just 5 minutes when Luke Shaw (5′) struck to give the home side an ideal start. The early goal allowed United to dictate much of the first half, and the hosts looked the more threatening side as they pushed Forest back with sharp movement and sustained pressure in the final third. By the break, the scoreline stood at 1-0, and it felt like Erik ten Hag’s side had the contest in hand.

Forest, though, came out with far more conviction after the restart and levelled in the 53rd minute through Morato (53′), who found the net with a header to swing momentum suddenly toward the visitors. Any sense of unease inside Old Trafford was brief. United hit back almost immediately, restoring their lead through Matheus Cunha (55′) in a response that underlined their attacking quality.

That second United goal was part of the broader story around Bruno Fernandes, whose creative influence again shaped the afternoon. The captain’s contribution saw him draw level with the Premier League record for assists in a single season, another reminder of how central he has been to United’s push into the top three.

Even then, Forest refused to go away. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side stayed competitive and asked questions, but United appeared to have given themselves breathing room when Bryan Mbeumo (76′) made it 3-1 with just over a quarter of an hour remaining. Yet the match still had another twist. Morgan Gibbs-White (78′) pulled one back almost straight away, setting up a nervy finish as Forest chased an equaliser and United were forced to defend their box with greater urgency.

The closing stages were stretched and anxious rather than polished. Casemiro went into the book in the 78th minute as the temperature rose, while Shaw also saw yellow deep in stoppage time. Forest kept probing, and with 51.3 percent possession they were far from passive passengers, but United’s greater volume in attack ultimately told. The home side finished with 29 shots, 8 on target and 7 corners, numbers that reflected just how often they managed to open Forest up across the 90 minutes.

Forest, for their part, can point to their resilience. Morato’s goal gave them a route back into the match and Gibbs-White’s finish in the 78th minute ensured a tense finale, but they could not quite find the leveller their second-half effort threatened to produce. Their 11 shots and 4 efforts on target showed they remained dangerous even while spending long spells without control.

For United, the bigger picture matters as much as the result itself. A fifth straight league match without defeat and confirmation of third place provide a strong closing note, while Fernandes’ latest landmark adds an individual layer to a productive team performance. On a day when Old Trafford wanted both points and a statement, United delivered enough of both.

Goals: Luke Shaw (5′), Morato (53′), Matheus Cunha (55′), Bryan Mbeumo (76′), Morgan Gibbs-White (78′).
