Sporting Kansas City and Seattle Sounders FC settled for a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Children’s Mercy Park, with both goals arriving in an entertaining first half before the fixture tightened up after the interval.
Seattle made the sharper start and needed only two minutes to move in front. Paul Rothrock opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, finishing off an early Sounders attack to stun the home crowd and give the visitors immediate control of the tempo.
But Sporting Kansas City responded well and found their equalizer in the 18th minute through Dejan Joveljic. The striker brought SKC level with a composed finish, rewarding a spell in which the hosts began to grow into the match after Seattle’s fast opening.
At 1-1 by halftime, the fixture remained finely balanced. Seattle carried more of the ball throughout the afternoon, finishing with 65 percent possession, 26 total shots, nine shots on target and nine corners. Sporting Kansas City, though, stayed dangerous on the break and were efficient with their openings, putting seven of their 10 shots on target.
The second half lacked the first half’s finishing touch, but not for lack of pressure from the Sounders. Seattle pushed for a winner and forced SKC to remain compact defensively, while Sporting looked to spring forward whenever space opened up. Jackson Ragen went into the book in the 31st minute, and Hassani Dotson was shown a yellow card in the 90th minute as the visitors tried to maintain their edge in a tense closing spell.
In the end, neither side could find the decisive goal. For Sporting Kansas City, the draw offered a needed response against one of the Western Conference’s stronger sides, especially after weathering long stretches without the ball. For Seattle, there may be some frustration after controlling possession and piling up chances, but a point on the road is still a result built on authority and pressure even if the finishing did not deliver a second goal.
