North Carolina Courage left Houston with all three points on Saturday night, edging Houston Dash 1-0 at Shell Energy Stadium thanks to Ashley Sanchez’s well-timed breakthrough in the 42nd minute.

In a tightly contested National Women’s Soccer League fixture, the Courage made their key moment count just before the interval. Sanchez struck in the 42nd minute to punish Houston before halftime, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish. That goal separated the sides after a first half in which both teams found shooting opportunities, but North Carolina showed the sharper edge in front of goal.

Houston responded with energy after the restart and pushed the pitch in search of an equaliser. The Dash finished with 51.9 percent possession, won nine corners, and matched the Courage with 16 total shots, but they could not find a way past the visiting defence. Despite generating pressure in wide areas and forcing set-piece situations, Houston managed only three shots on target, and that ultimately told the story.

North Carolina, by contrast, looked more clinical throughout the match. The Courage put eight of their 16 shots on target and absorbed long stretches of second-half pressure with discipline. Uno Shiragaki was booked in the 19th minute for the visitors, while Houston defender Avery Patterson saw yellow in the 57th minute as the fixture became increasingly combative.

The Dash’s task grew even more difficult in the 77th minute when substitute Ally Schlegel was shown a red card, leaving the hosts to chase the match with 10 players. Even so, Houston continued to battle and tried to make their set pieces count deep into stoppage time. Paige Nielsen picked up a yellow card for North Carolina in the 90+2nd minute as the visitors dug in to preserve their narrow advantage.

At full time, Sanchez’s 42nd-minute goal stood as the difference in a hard-fought road result. For Houston, it was a frustrating evening of missed chances and pressure without reward. For North Carolina Courage, it was an efficient away performance built on a decisive attacking moment and a resilient defensive finish.
