Angel City FC found their breakthrough after the interval and left Evanston with a deserved 2-0 victory over Chicago Stars FC on Saturday night in the National Women’s Soccer League.
After a scoreless first half at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, the visitors raised the tempo and quality in the final third, eventually pulling clear through Maiara Niehues’ 56th-minute penalty before Sveindís Jónsdóttir sealed the result deep into stoppage time at 90+8′.
The opening 45 minutes were competitive without yielding a goal. Chicago worked to stay compact and keep Angel City from finding too much space between the lines, while the away side steadily built pressure. The first half ended 0-0, though there were signs that Angel City were beginning to tilt the pitch, especially with their willingness to attack from wide areas and force set-piece situations.
Chicago’s discipline was tested just before the break when Michelle Alozie went into the book at 45+6′. Still, the hosts made it to halftime level and with a platform to build on.
The decisive moment arrived in the 56th minute. Angel City were awarded a penalty, and Maiara Niehues stepped up to convert from the spot at 56′, giving the visitors the lead and forcing Chicago to chase the fixture.
From there, Angel City looked the more threatening side. They finished with 52.5 percent possession, 22 shots and 6 efforts on target, compared with Chicago’s 8 shots and 3 on target.
