Shell Energy Stadium was the setting for a breathless MLS fixture on Saturday evening as Houston Dynamo FC edged out the Portland Timbers 3–2 in a match that had drama, momentum swings, and a nail-biting finish that kept supporters on the edge of their seats deep into stoppage time.
First Half: Guerra’s Last-Gasp Strike Sets the Tone
For much of the opening 45 minutes, both sides traded possession in a tightly contested affair, with neither keeper unduly troubled. The Timbers held slightly more of the ball as the half progressed, and tensions began to bubble — Portland’s Ezequiel Ponce picking up a yellow card in the first minute of first-half stoppage time after a petulant foul.
But it was Houston who struck last in the first half, and in stunning fashion. Deep into four additional minutes, forward Gage Guerra popped up to give the Dynamo the lead with a crucial goal on the stroke of half-time (45’+4′). It was a gut-punch for Portland, who headed to the dressing room trailing despite their possession advantage. The mood remained heated at the break, with Ariel Lassiter picking up a yellow card just a minute after the goal and another Portland player booked in the chaotic closing moments of the half.
Second Half: Portland Mount a Stunning Comeback
The Timbers returned from the interval with renewed intent, and their response was swift and clinical. Just before the hour mark, Guilherme Augusto powered home a header to level the fixture (62′), rewarding Portland’s persistence and silencing the home crowd.
With momentum firmly on their side, Portland pushed for a second and found it. Felipe Andrade turned the match on its head in the 77th minute, converting to put the visitors ahead for the first time all evening (77′). The Timbers looked to be heading for three away points in Texas.
But Houston had other ideas. Within just two minutes, the Dynamo levelled in explosive fashion. Norwegian winger Kristoffer Velde stepped up to equalise in the 79th minute (79′), restoring parity and sending Shell Energy Stadium into delirium. It was a remarkable turnaround — the hosts had gone from behind to level in the blink of an eye.
Stoppage Time Chaos: Red Card and a Last Gasp
The closing stages were anything but calm. As the match ticked into stoppage time, Portland substitute Nicholas Markanich was shown a straight red card in the 90’+3′ minute, leaving the Timbers to see out the remainder of the match with ten men — a significant blow at such a critical juncture.
With Portland down to ten, Houston took full advantage. The Dynamo grabbed what proved to be the decisive goal, completing a remarkable second-half turnaround to make it 3–2. Guilherme Augusto, who had earlier scored and been a thorn in Houston’s side all evening, was then cautioned in the 90’+13′ minute as tempers frayed.
The drama was not yet over. Deep into an extraordinary 18 minutes of stoppage time, Portland midfielder Mateusz Bogusz pulled one back with a late goal (90’+15′) to make it 3–2 and set up a frantic finale. The Timbers pressed desperately for an equaliser, but the Dynamo held firm, seeing out the remaining moments to claim all three points.
Match Verdict
Houston’s victory was hard-earned and thoroughly dramatic. The Dynamo — who registered 19 shots and won 10 corners — showed real character to respond immediately after conceding the lead in the second half, with Velde’s 79th-minute goal the decisive turning point. Portland, for their part, will feel this one bitterly; they were the better side for long periods and had fought back from a goal down, only to be undone by the red card and Houston’s relentless home pressure.
For the Dynamo, it is a result that will do wonders for confidence. For the Timbers, the long journey back to Portland begins with some painful reflection on what might have been.
