Brighton & Hove Albion made an emphatic start to their Premier League campaign, dismantling Aston Villa 4-0 at the American Express Stadium after a ruthless first-half performance.

The Seagulls were in front inside eight minutes when Aston Villa defender Victor Lindelöf turned the ball into his own net at 8′. Brighton seized control from there, monopolising possession and repeatedly forcing Villa backwards.

Maxim De Cuyper doubled the advantage at 18′, before Jack Hinshelwood turned the fixture into a rout with two goals in barely a minute. Hinshelwood rose to head home at 30′ and struck again at 31′, completing a remarkable four-goal opening half for the hosts.

Villa’s afternoon deteriorated further when João Gomes was sent off at 40′, leaving the visitors with 10 men and a mountain already far too steep to climb. Brighton managed the second half with authority, keeping Villa without a shot on target and preserving a deserved clean sheet.

The numbers underlined Brighton’s command: they held 72.8% possession, registered 21 shots to Villa’s six, and put six efforts on target. Villa, meanwhile, could not find a response after being overwhelmed by Brighton’s sharp movement and sustained pressure.

Brighton now turn their attention to a home fixture against Chelsea on Sunday, August 30. Aston Villa will look to regroup before travelling to Arsenal on Monday, August 31.
