Liverpool made a decisive four-minute spell count at Anfield, beating Brighton & Hove Albion 2–0 in the Premier League on Sunday. A Pascal Gross own goal in the 17th minute opened the way before Alexander Isak doubled the advantage with a volley in the 21st minute.

Those early blows proved enough. Brighton finished with almost two-thirds of the possession and more attempts, but just one shot on target told the story of their difficulty turning control of the ball into a meaningful response.

Two quick goals settle the contest

Liverpool’s breakthrough arrived through an unfortunate intervention from Gross, whose own goal in the 17th minute put the hosts ahead. Brighton had little time to regroup before Isak struck in the 21st minute, his volley giving Liverpool a two-goal cushion with less than a quarter of the match played.

It was a damaging sequence for the visitors and established a lead Liverpool would carry into the interval. Brighton defender Olivier Boscagli was booked in first-half stoppage time, adding to a frustrating opening period for the away side.

Brighton’s possession brings no breakthrough

The second half produced no further goals. Brighton ended the fixture with 64.4% possession and 17 shots to Liverpool’s 13, yet the hosts held a clear advantage in attempts on target: four to one.

That contrast was central to the result. Brighton saw plenty of the ball but could not translate their greater volume of attempts into sustained accuracy. Liverpool, with only 35.6% possession, had already supplied the decisive finish and protected their advantage through to the final whistle.

Costinha received Brighton’s second yellow card in the 73rd minute. There was no late consolation for the visitors, leaving Liverpool with a clean sheet to accompany their three points.

Arsenal and Manchester City await

Liverpool next face Arsenal on Sunday, November 1, with kick-off scheduled for 8:30 AM PST. Brighton return to action against Manchester City on Saturday, October 31, at 8:00 AM PDT.

For Liverpool, this was a reminder that possession need not dictate the outcome. Their early two-goal burst settled the contest; Brighton’s challenge now is to make their time on the ball count against another demanding opponent.
