Newcastle United made their finishing count at Selhurst Park, with goals from William Osula in the 47th minute and Harvey Barnes in the 58th securing a 2–0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

After a goalless opening half, Newcastle transformed the fixture with two goals early in the second period. Palace finished with more possession and more attempts, but the visitors converted their only two shots on target to leave south London with all three points.

Newcastle break through after the interval

Neither side found a breakthrough before half-time. Newcastle midfielder Nico González was booked in the 36th minute, followed by Fabian Schär in first-half stoppage time, as the teams reached the interval level at 0–0.

That balance lasted barely beyond the restart. Osula opened the scoring in the 47th minute, immediately putting Palace on the back foot and giving Newcastle the advantage.

Barnes then doubled the lead in the 58th minute. In an 11-minute spell, the visitors had turned a level contest into a two-goal cushion, leaving Palace with a substantial task for the remainder of the afternoon.

Palace’s greater volume brings no reward

The hosts had 52.5% possession and registered 17 attempts to Newcastle’s 10. They also won seven corners compared with the visitors’ four, yet none of that produced a goal.

Palace put four efforts on target without finding the net. Newcastle, by contrast, finished with two shots on target and two goals: a stark illustration of the efficiency that decided the match.

Further bookings followed in the closing stages. Palace’s Yéremy Pino received a yellow card in the 75th minute, Newcastle’s Lewis Hall in the 78th, and Palace’s Anan Khalaili in the 79th. Jaydee Canvot was also cautioned in second-half stoppage time.

There was no late route back for the hosts. Newcastle saw out the contest with their clean sheet intact, making the early second-half breakthrough decisive.

What comes next?

Palace face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, October 31, with kick-off scheduled for 10:30 a.m. PDT. Newcastle’s next Premier League fixture is against Everton on Monday, November 2, at noon PST.

For Newcastle, this was an afternoon defined by taking their opportunities. For Palace, the challenge is to turn possession and attempts into the goals that were missing at Selhurst Park.
