Real Salt Lake struck twice early and weathered Sporting Kansas City’s response to claim a 3-1 MLS victory at Sporting Park on Saturday, October 17. Morgan Guilavogui led the visitors with goals in the 11th and 61st minutes, while Sergi Solans added a 14th-minute goal. Taylor Calheira’s reply in the 26th minute gave Sporting hope, but the hosts could not complete the comeback.
Early double puts Salt Lake in command
The visitors wasted little time establishing an advantage in this Western Conference fixture. Guilavogui opened the scoring in the 11th minute, and Solans doubled the lead in the 14th, leaving Sporting facing a two-goal deficit before the match had reached the quarter-hour mark.
Calheira brought the hosts back into contention with his 26th-minute goal, cutting the deficit to 2-1. That remained the margin at halftime, setting up a second half in which Sporting needed just one goal to draw level.
Guilavogui restores the cushion
The decisive next goal instead belonged to Salt Lake. Guilavogui struck again in the 61st minute, completing his brace and restoring the visitors’ two-goal advantage. Sporting were unable to find another reply as RSL secured all three points.
The underlying numbers highlighted the difference in attacking output. Sporting held a narrow edge in possession, with 50.8 percent, and won seven corners to Salt Lake’s five. But the visitors produced 13 shots to the hosts’ eight and, more tellingly, put eight attempts on target compared with Sporting’s three.
For Kansas City, possession and set-piece opportunities did not translate into enough threat. For Salt Lake, the early breakthrough and Guilavogui’s second-half intervention provided the foundation for a convincing away result.
What comes next
Both clubs return to MLS action on Saturday, October 24. Sporting Kansas City face Austin FC, while Real Salt Lake take on St. Louis CITY SC. Both fixtures are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PDT.
