Villarreal turned an early setback into a convincing result on Tuesday, October 13, beating Napoli 3–1 at the Estadio de la Cerámica in the UEFA Champions League league phase. Georges Mikautadze’s 23rd-minute equaliser and Santiago Mouriño’s goal in the 26th minute transformed the first half, before Tani Oluwaseyi struck in the 86th minute to settle the fixture.

Three-minute turnaround changes the match

Napoli made the brighter start on the scoreboard, with Amir Rrahmani putting the visitors ahead in the eighth minute. That early advantage gave the Italian side a platform, but Villarreal’s response proved decisive.

Mikautadze brought the hosts level in the 23rd minute. Just three minutes later, Mouriño added Villarreal’s second, turning a 1–0 deficit into a 2–1 lead and leaving Napoli with a very different challenge.

The rapid double lifted the Yellow Submarine into the interval ahead. Mikautadze also picked up a yellow card in the 33rd minute, but his equaliser had already helped swing the contest in Villarreal’s favour.

Oluwaseyi provides the late insurance

With only one goal separating the sides, Napoli remained within reach of a draw throughout much of the second half. Villarreal, however, kept their advantage intact until Oluwaseyi’s 86th-minute goal gave them breathing room and completed the 3–1 victory.

The overall numbers supported the hosts’ success. Villarreal held 52% possession and produced 17 attempts to Napoli’s 11, with four shots on target against three. Most tellingly, three of Villarreal’s four efforts on target resulted in goals: a clinical return that made the difference.

Napoli committed 15 fouls compared with Villarreal’s eight. Giovane, Kevin De Bruyne and Giovanni Di Lorenzo were booked for the visitors, while Nathan Saliba joined Mikautadze in the hosts’ disciplinary tally. Both sides won four corners.

A valuable European response

For Villarreal, the defining passage was the swift first-half turnaround: two goals in three minutes established a lead they never surrendered. Napoli’s early breakthrough ultimately brought no points, while Oluwaseyi’s late contribution ensured the hosts finished with all three.
