New York City FC delivered a disciplined and clinical away performance on Saturday night, defeating Real Salt Lake 2-0 at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.
Despite spending less time on the ball and facing sustained home pressure, NYCFC made their moments count. Nicolás Fernández broke the deadlock in the 41st minute, giving the visitors a valuable lead heading into half-time.
Real Salt Lake responded with greater urgency after the interval and finished with 53% possession, 15 shots and 10 corners. But the hosts could not find a way through a resolute New York City FC defence, even putting six efforts on target.
NYCFC then struck the decisive blow in the 61st minute when Luighi Hanri found the net to double the visitors’ advantage. It was a ruthless contrast in finishing: New York City FC produced just six shots and three on target, yet converted two of those openings into goals.
Real Salt Lake’s frustrations showed as Alexandros Katranis was booked in the 64th minute and Lineker Rodrigues followed into the book five minutes later. NYCFC managed the closing stages effectively, although Kevin O’Toole was cautioned in the 81st minute and goalkeeper Matt Freese received a late yellow card in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
The result leaves Real Salt Lake with a 8-5-11 league record, while New York City FC improve to 8-8-9. RSL will look to respond when they host Vancouver Whitecaps on September 19, while NYCFC return to action against Red Bull New York on September 18.
