Aston Villa earned a breathless 3-2 away victory over Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League league phase on Tuesday, surviving sustained second-half pressure at Jan Breydel Stadium after a ruthless opening 45 minutes.
Villa struck first in the 11th minute through John McGinn, but Club Brugge quickly showed their intent when Hugo Vetlesen levelled in the 19th minute. The visitors responded immediately, with Emiliano Buendía restoring their advantage in the 22nd minute before Nicolas Jackson added a crucial third in the 43rd minute.
That late first-half goal gave Aston Villa a 3-1 interval lead, even though Brugge had enjoyed the greater share of possession. The Belgian side controlled 63.9% of the ball across the match, but Villa were sharper when openings appeared, producing 21 shots and nine efforts on target.
Club Brugge refused to let the fixture drift away. Nicolo Tresoldi converted a penalty in the 61st minute to cut the deficit to one goal, setting up an anxious final half-hour for the visitors. Brugge pressed for an equaliser and finished with 14 shots, seven of them on target, but Villa’s defence held firm through four minutes of stoppage time.
The contest became increasingly combative as the clock ran down. McGinn was booked in the 78th minute, while Club Brugge’s Romeo Vermant and Villa’s João Gomes both saw yellow cards in the 89th minute. Earlier bookings had gone to Villa’s Ian Maatsen, along with Brugge pair Hans Vanaken and Jan Virgili.
Villa’s counter-attacking threat and clinical first-half finishing ultimately made the difference. Club Brugge will take encouragement from their possession and spirited response after the break, but Aston Villa leave Brugge with a valuable Champions League victory.
