Washington Spirit turned in one of their sharpest performances of the young National Women’s Soccer League season on Friday night, sweeping aside Kansas City Current 4-0 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
In front of 19,215 fans, the Spirit controlled long stretches of the fixture and made their superiority count in both halves. Leicy Santos opened the scoring in the 25th minute, Trinity Rodman doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time at 45’+3′, Santos grabbed her second in the 56th minute, and Claudia Martínez put the finishing touch on an emphatic result in the 75th minute.
The home side paired attacking quality with control. Washington finished with 57.1 percent possession, outshot Kansas City 17-9, and put seven efforts on target. Kansas City managed only three shots on target and never found a way back into the match once the Spirit settled into their rhythm.
The breakthrough arrived midway through the first half when Santos struck in the 25th minute, rewarding a bright opening from the Spirit. Washington had already been asking questions in advanced areas, moving the ball well and forcing Kansas City to defend deeper than they would have liked.
Kansas City’s frustration showed in a pair of bookings before the interval, with Kayla Sharples shown yellow in the 13th minute and Michelle Cooper cautioned in the 43rd. And just when the Current needed to reach halftime only a goal down, Rodman delivered a major blow. Her goal at 45’+3′ sent Washington into the break with a 2-0 lead and full momentum.
If there was any hope of a Kansas City response after halftime, Santos ended it quickly. The Spirit midfielder struck again in the 56th minute to make it 3-0, capping a ruthless start to the second half and leaving the visitors with too much ground to make up.
From there, Washington managed the contest with authority, continuing to dictate possession and pin Kansas City back. The fourth goal arrived in the 75th minute through Claudia Martínez, who added further gloss to the scoreline and underlined the Spirit’s depth in attack.
It was a complete home performance: composed in buildup, clinical in the final third, and secure defensively. Washington’s back line gave Kansas City little room to operate, while the midfield consistently won second balls and kept the Current from building sustained pressure.
For Kansas City, this was a difficult night from start to finish. The visitors were second-best in too many phases of play and could not turn their attacking moments into anything meaningful on the pitch. Their current run of form will be a concern, and this fixture offered few positives by full time.
For the Spirit, though, this was exactly the sort of statement result managers and supporters love to see. Santos’ brace and Rodman’s influence headlined the night, but the bigger takeaway was how complete Washington looked across 90 minutes. On this evidence, the Spirit are building real momentum.
Goal scorers: Leicy Santos 25′, Trinity Rodman 45’+3′, Leicy Santos 56′, Claudia Martínez 75′.
