Manchester United swept aside Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Bruno Fernandes producing a decisive hat-trick in a commanding second-half display.
Ipswich made the brighter breakthrough in the 29th minute when Leif Davis fired the visitors ahead, giving the travelling support plenty to believe in. United had controlled much of the ball but needed a response, and their captain delivered it five minutes before the interval. Fernandes struck in the 40th minute to bring the hosts level and send the sides into half-time at 1-1.
The contest changed quickly after the restart. Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves turned the ball into his own net in the 56th minute, handing United the lead, before Fernandes converted a penalty in the 61st minute. The Portuguese playmaker completed his hat-trick seven minutes later, scoring in the 68th minute as United’s attacking pressure finally translated into a comfortable advantage.
United were relentless in possession and chance creation, finishing with 60.4% of the ball, 33 shots and 11 efforts on target. Ipswich managed nine shots and five on target, but were unable to contain the home side once the match opened up.
Bryan Mbeumo added United’s fifth goal in the 82nd minute, putting the finishing touch on an emphatic Old Trafford performance. Ipswich substitute Chuba Akpom scored a stoppage-time consolation in the 90+1st minute, but it did little to alter the outcome.
Fernandes’ treble was the headline act in a five-goal United display, while Mbeumo’s late strike underlined the hosts’ attacking depth. Manchester United now turn their attention to next Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Everton. Ipswich face a difficult trip to Liverpool on Friday.
