New York City FC and Toronto FC settled for a competitive 1-1 draw at Yankee Stadium on Friday night, with both goals arriving in a tense first half.
NYCFC made the sharper start and were rewarded in the eighth minute when Nicolás Fernández calmly converted from the penalty spot to put the home side ahead. The early goal gave New York City FC a platform, but Toronto remained in the contest and matched their hosts closely in possession.
The visitors found their response at the very end of the opening half. Djordje Mihailovic struck in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time, 45+6′, to level the match and ensure the sides went into the interval at 1-1.
Neither side could find a decisive second goal after the break. NYCFC finished with a 16-13 edge in shots, while both teams registered five efforts on target. Toronto held a narrow possession advantage at 50.6%, underlining how finely balanced the fixture was across 90 minutes.
The second half brought discipline as well as determination, with Toronto’s Niklas Dorsch booked in the 56th minute and Jackson Gilman shown a yellow card in the 61st. But despite the late pressure and 90+6′ of action, neither side could force a winner.
It was a legitimate share of the points: NYCFC will value their attacking output but rue not turning more of their 16 attempts into a second goal, while Toronto leave New York with a hard-earned result after Mihailovic’s timely equaliser.
