Charlotte FC delivered an efficient away-day performance to beat Atlanta United FC 2-0 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday night, with Idan Toklomati and Liel Abada supplying the decisive goals in Major League Soccer.
Atlanta had more of the ball and more attempts, but Charlotte were sharper in the moments that mattered. The visitors absorbed sustained pressure, made their openings count and protected their lead with increasing assurance as the match wore on.
Toklomati gives Charlotte the edge
Charlotte struck first in the 22nd minute when Idan Toklomati found the net to put the visitors ahead. The goal gave Charlotte a valuable platform, and they carried their 1-0 advantage into halftime despite Atlanta controlling 58.6 percent of possession.
Atlanta pushed for a response, finishing with 18 shots and 11 corners, but only three of those efforts tested the Charlotte goalkeeper. The home side could not convert territorial pressure into the goal that might have shifted the momentum.
Abada doubles the lead after the break
Charlotte made the ideal start to the second half. Liel Abada scored in the 48th minute, extending the visitors’ lead and leaving Atlanta with a steep climb.
The second goal allowed Charlotte to manage the fixture on their terms. They finished with five shots on target from 13 attempts, compared with Atlanta’s three on target from 18, a reflection of their greater cutting edge in front of goal.
Djibril Diani was booked for Charlotte in first-half stoppage time, while Atlanta substitute Adrian Gill received a yellow card in the 85th minute. Neither side had a player sent off as Charlotte saw out a disciplined clean-sheet victory.
The result moves Charlotte FC on with another important three points, while Atlanta United will look to rediscover their finishing touch when Inter Miami CF visit next Saturday. Charlotte return home to face Houston Dynamo FC on the same day.
