CF Montréal 1-1 D.C. United
CF Montréal were made to settle for a 1-1 draw with D.C. United at Stade Saputo on Saturday night, as Prince Owusu’s penalty was cancelled out by Tai Baribo’s second-half header.
There was no breakthrough in a tightly contested first half, although Montréal established territorial control and kept D.C. United under sustained pressure. The home side finished the match with 66.6% possession, 20 shots and seven efforts on target, but D.C. United stayed compact and weathered the opening 45 minutes.
The match turned shortly after the interval. D.C. United defender Keisuke Kurokawa was booked in the 49th minute, and Montréal took full advantage from the resulting decisive moment. Owusu converted from the penalty spot in the 50th minute to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Montréal could not turn their dominance into a second goal, however, and D.C. United punished that missed opportunity. With the visitors creating little for much of the match, Tai Baribo headed home in the 66th minute to level the fixture and deliver a clinical response from one of D.C.’s limited attacking openings.
The hosts continued to press, winning five corners and registering 13 shot assists, but D.C. United protected the point with discipline. The visitors produced only seven shots and two on target, yet Baribo’s finish ensured their resistance had a tangible reward.
It was a frustrating result for Montréal after controlling long stretches of the contest, while D.C. United will view the draw as a hard-earned outcome on the road. Both sides had to accept a point after an even scoreline, but the home side will feel it left chances behind on the Stade Saputo pitch.
