Sporting Kansas City claimed a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Minnesota United FC on Wednesday night at Children’s Mercy Park, riding first-half control and second-half resilience to see out an important Major League Soccer result.
Despite finishing with just 34.5 percent of the possession, Sporting were sharper in the decisive moments and more clinical in front of goal. Minnesota United FC controlled long stretches of the ball and piled up 16 shots to Sporting’s 11, but the home side found the cutting edge that ultimately separated the teams.
The breakthrough arrived in the 28th minute, when Dejan Joveljic put Sporting Kansas City in front with a well-taken finish to cap a promising spell from the hosts. It gave Sporting a 1-0 halftime lead and forced Minnesota to chase the fixture after the interval.
Sporting doubled the advantage in the 54th minute through Manu García, whose goal appeared to put the hosts firmly in command. At 2-0, Peter Vermes’ side looked set for a relatively comfortable night, especially after producing seven shots on target from their 11 attempts.
Minnesota United FC, though, did not fold. Eric Ramsay’s side continued to press, using their territorial edge and six corners to pin Sporting deeper and deeper. The visitors found a route back in the 75th minute when Devin Padelford rose to head home, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and setting up a tense finish.
From there, the final phase belonged largely to Minnesota’s pressure and Sporting’s resistance. The visitors ended with 65.5 percent possession and 10 shots on target, but they could not find the equalizer their second-half push threatened to produce. Sporting, meanwhile, dug in across stoppage time and protected the lead through to the final whistle.
The match also carried a bit of an edge, with yellow cards shown to Kyle Duncan in the 21st minute, Capita in first-half stoppage time, Joaquín Pereyra in the 56th minute, Joveljic in the 74th minute, and Bongokuhle Hlongwane in the 84th minute.
In the end, this was a fixture decided by efficiency. Joveljic’s goal in the 28th minute and García’s strike in the 54th minute gave Sporting Kansas City enough of a cushion, and Padelford’s 75th-minute header proved only a late consolation for Minnesota United FC. For Sporting, it was a night of taking chances and standing firm. For Minnesota, it was a frustrating reminder that dominance on the ball does not always translate into points.
