Morgan Whittaker provided the late breakthrough as Colorado Rapids defeated Vancouver Whitecaps 1–0 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, October 24. His 81st-minute header settled an MLS Western Conference fixture that remained goalless deep into the second half.

Colorado carried the greater attacking threat across the evening, finishing with 18 shots to Vancouver’s eight and an 8–2 advantage in efforts on target. Yet the hosts had to wait until the closing stages to turn that superiority into the decisive goal.

Goalless at the break

Neither side found a breakthrough before halftime, leaving the match level at 0–0. Wayne Frederick’s 21st-minute yellow card was the first booking of the evening, with the contest still finely balanced on the scoreboard.

Possession ultimately proved almost evenly shared: Colorado finished with 50.8 percent to Vancouver’s 49.2 percent. The difference lay in attacking output, with the Rapids producing more than twice as many attempts and winning six corners to the visitors’ three.

Whittaker makes the difference

With a draw still a possibility, Whittaker broke the deadlock in the 81st minute, heading home the only goal of the match. It was the decisive reward for Colorado’s greater threat in front of goal and left Vancouver with little time to respond.

The Whitecaps could not find an equalizer, and Colorado protected their narrow advantage through stoppage time. Jackson Travis received a yellow card in the fourth added minute before the final whistle confirmed a home victory and a clean sheet.

For Vancouver, the frustration was clear: a near-equal share of possession yielded just two efforts on target. Colorado, by contrast, paired their larger volume of chances with the one finish that mattered.

Next fixtures

Both clubs return to MLS action on Wednesday, October 28. Colorado face San Jose Earthquakes, while Vancouver take on San Diego FC, with both fixtures scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PDT.
