Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium delivered one of the most chaotic finishes of the MLS season as San Diego FC and FC Cincinnati battled to a breathless 3-3 draw.
What looked settled more than once refused to stay that way. San Diego struck first, Cincinnati responded, the hosts moved ahead again, and then the final minutes descended into pure mayhem as Marcus Ingvartsen thought he had won it for the visitors in the 90’+6′ minute before Tom Barlow rescued San Diego in the 90’+8′ minute.
The match opened with the home side on the front foot, and their early pressure paid off in the 11th minute when Kenji Mboma Dem (11′) put San Diego FC in front. It was a deserved breakthrough in a first half where the hosts controlled long stretches of possession and pinned Cincinnati back.
FC Cincinnati, though, grew into the fixture and showed their efficiency in the final third. Their equaliser arrived in the 32nd minute through Marcus Ingvartsen (32′), who brought the visitors level at 1-1 and shifted the momentum before the interval.
With the sides even at the break, the second half started at a similar tempo. San Diego reclaimed the lead in the 50th minute when Tom Barlow (50′) found the net, restoring the advantage for the hosts and giving the Snapdragon Stadium crowd another lift.
Yet Cincinnati stayed alive in the contest and punished another opening in the 66th minute. Amahl Pellegrino (66′) made it 2-2, capping another sharp attacking move from a side that spent less time on the ball but remained dangerous whenever it broke forward.
That contrast defined much of the night. San Diego finished with 63.4 percent possession, 16 shots and seven corners, but Cincinnati were far more direct and clinical, recording six shots on target from just eight attempts. Every time the visitors got into promising areas, they looked capable of changing the match.
Then came the astonishing finale.
Deep into stoppage time, Cincinnati appeared to have completed the turnaround when Marcus Ingvartsen (90’+6′) struck his second goal of the night to put the visitors 3-2 ahead. After absorbing so much of San Diego’s territorial control, it felt like a smash-and-grab result was within reach.
But San Diego had one last answer. In the 90’+8′ minute, Tom Barlow (90’+8′) matched Ingvartsen with his own brace, firing home a dramatic late equaliser to spark celebrations and ensure the points were shared.
In the end, a draw was a fair reflection of a fixture full of momentum swings and attacking quality. San Diego will point to their control of possession and chance creation; Cincinnati will look at their ruthless finishing and wonder how close they came to stealing all three points.
Both sides leave with identical 4-4-5 records, and both can claim positives from a night that showcased exactly why MLS so often produces must-watch late drama.
