D.C. United looked set to collect all three points at Audi Field on Saturday night, only for St. Louis CITY SC to snatch a dramatic late equaliser in a 1-1 Major League Soccer draw.

After a first half short on cutting edge but not on intensity, the match came alive after the interval. Christopher Durkin broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 50th minute, giving D.C. United a lead their supporters hoped would be enough to see out the fixture. But with full time approaching, João Peglow struck in the 90th minute to silence the home crowd and ensure St. Louis went back to Missouri with a deserved share of the spoils.

The opening 45 minutes ended goalless, though there was no shortage of bite. St. Louis CITY SC saw more of the ball and finished the night with 56.8 percent possession, while also forcing eight corners to D.C. United’s five. The visitors probed steadily, but D.C. United stayed compact and looked ready to break whenever space appeared.

Discipline was already becoming an issue for the away side before the break. Fallou Fall entered the book in the 28th minute and Conrad Wallem followed him with a yellow card in the 41st, signs of the pressure D.C. United were trying to apply in midfield and transition.

The breakthrough came five minutes into the second half. Durkin found the moment D.C. United needed in the 50th minute, finishing off a move that shifted the momentum toward the hosts and lifted the tempo inside Audi Field. From there, D.C. United had something to protect, and the match took on a different shape.

St. Louis CITY SC continued to push, however, and their underlying numbers showed why they remained in the contest. The visitors finished with 16 total shots to D.C. United’s 15 and produced 14 shot assists, compared with nine from the home side. Even so, D.C. United carried a threat of their own and tested the St. Louis back line often enough to suggest a second goal might come.

As the second half wore on, the fixture became increasingly combative. Miguel Perez was booked in the 58th minute for St. Louis, while D.C. United’s Jackson Hopkins saw yellow in the 60th. Silvan Hefti was cautioned for the visitors in the 70th minute as both sides fought for control in a tense final stretch.

Just when it seemed D.C. United would hold on, St. Louis CITY SC found their breakthrough. Peglow struck in the 90th minute, delivering the late goal that their pressure had threatened for much of the night. It was a cruel blow for the hosts, who had defended resolutely for long stretches but could not quite shut the door.

There was still time for one more twist. Wallem, already booked in the first half, was sent off in the 90th+2nd minute to leave St. Louis CITY SC down to 10 men for the closing moments. Kye Rowles picked up a yellow card in the 90th+3rd minute, and Mamadou Fall was also booked in the 90th+5th minute as a fractious finish played out in a rush of stoppage-time tension.

In the end, a draw felt like a fair result. St. Louis CITY SC controlled more possession and generated slightly more attacking volume, but D.C. United were efficient after the break and came within moments of seeing out an important home win. Instead, both managers had to settle for a point from a match that turned sharply in the second half and finished with late drama at both ends.

For D.C. United, Durkin’s 50th-minute goal was the centerpiece of an otherwise gritty performance. For St. Louis CITY SC, Peglow’s 90th-minute finish ensured their persistence was rewarded. Neither side got everything it wanted, but both had enough moments to feel the result reflected a hard-fought MLS fixture.
