San Diego FC turned Snapdragon Stadium into a celebration on Wednesday night, dismantling Austin FC 5-0 in an emphatic Major League Soccer fixture.
The hosts were sharp from the opening whistle and never allowed Austin FC to settle. David Vazquez opened the scoring in the 8th minute, setting the tone for a relentless first-half display. San Diego doubled the advantage in the 17th minute when Anders Dreyer found the net, and from there the home side controlled both territory and tempo.
Holding a 2-0 lead at the interval, San Diego FC returned after the break with the same intensity. Pedro Soma added the third goal in the 54th minute to effectively put the result beyond doubt, before Marcus Ingvartsen joined the scoresheet in the 79th minute as Austin’s resistance completely faded. Vazquez then capped the night with his second goal in stoppage time, striking again in the 90+1st minute to complete the five-star performance.
It was a dominant all-around outing from San Diego FC, who finished with 58.5 percent possession, 22 total shots and 10 efforts on target. Their attacking movement caused problems throughout, and the five assists underlined just how cohesive the side looked going forward. Austin FC, by contrast, managed just nine shots and only three on target, rarely threatening a response despite winning four corners.
San Diego’s defensive work deserves mention as well. Even with the match firmly in hand, the hosts stayed organized, protected their penalty area and saw out the clean sheet without late lapses. Austin never found a foothold on the pitch, and the visitors were second-best in most phases of the fixture.
For San Diego FC, this felt like more than just three points. It was one of their most complete performances of the league campaign so far: early incision, midfield control, efficient finishing and a shutout at the back. For Austin FC, meanwhile, this was a long night in Southern California and one their manager will want addressed quickly before the next fixture.
