Vancouver Whitecaps continued their strong Major League Soccer form on Wednesday night, earning a hard-fought 3-2 victory over FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in a lively fixture that swung back and forth before the visitors finally held firm.
In a match packed with momentum shifts, Dallas struck first through Petar Musa (10′), who converted from the penalty spot to give the home side an early foothold. But Vancouver responded impressively, with Sebastian Berhalter (23′) hauling the Whitecaps level before the visitors were handed a further boost when Osaze Urhoghide scored an own goal (27′), turning the match on its head before the interval.
Dallas came out for the second half with greater urgency and found an immediate route back into the fixture when Logan Farrington (49′) powered home a header to make it 2-2. For a spell, the hosts looked capable of completing the turnaround, but Vancouver carried the sharper edge in the final third all evening and eventually found the decisive moment through Berhalter again, who struck his second of the night in the 64th minute.
That winning goal capped an influential display from Berhalter, whose movement and timing repeatedly caused problems for Dallas. Vancouver finished with the better attacking numbers, recording 16 total shots to Dallas’ 8 and putting 6 efforts on target compared to the hosts’ 3. Possession was nearly even, with the Whitecaps holding a slim 50.9 percent share, but their greater incision in advanced areas proved decisive.
The first half set the tone for an open contest. Musa’s penalty had given Dallas a platform, yet Vancouver refused to retreat and steadily grew into the match. Berhalter’s equalizer in the 23rd minute shifted the energy, and the unfortunate own goal from Urhoghide four minutes later left Dallas chasing after surrendering control.
To their credit, the home side responded well after the restart. Farrington’s header at 49 minutes injected belief into the stands and gave the match fresh tension. Dallas also matched Vancouver on corner kicks, with both sides winning six, but the Whitecaps remained the more dangerous side in transition and from sustained attacks.
Discipline also played its part in a feisty fixture. Dallas collected yellow cards for Ran Binyamin, Shaq Moore and Farrington, while Vancouver saw Tristan Blackmon, Cheick Sabaly, Edier Ocampo and Kenji Cabrera booked. The home side’s task became even tougher when Dallas had a player sent off in the 87th minute, blunting any hopes of a late equalizer during a lengthy period of stoppage time.
By full time, Vancouver had done enough to claim another valuable away result, improving on a strong run of form with a composed and clinical performance. Dallas, meanwhile, can point to moments of promise in attack, but defensive lapses and the late dismissal ultimately left them empty-handed.
Scorers: Petar Musa (10′ pen), Sebastian Berhalter (23′, 64′), Osaze Urhoghide (27′ own goal), Logan Farrington (49′).
