Thierno Barry’s 49th-minute goal proved decisive as Everton claimed a 1–0 Premier League victory over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Monday. Newcastle finished the match with 10 men after Jacob Ramsey’s stoppage-time dismissal capped a frustrating evening for the hosts.

In front of 52,279 supporters, the sides reached half-time level at 0–0. Neither had found the breakthrough, leaving the fixture finely balanced heading into the second half. Dan Burn’s 32nd-minute booking was the only first-half disciplinary incident recorded.

Barry makes the difference after the interval

Everton needed just four minutes of the second half to move ahead, with Barry finding the net in the 49th minute. It was the match’s only goal and ultimately enough to secure all three points for the visitors.

Newcastle’s attacking numbers told the story of an evening short on precision. The hosts registered 17 attempts but put only two on target, despite holding a narrow possession advantage of 51.6%. Everton produced 16 attempts, five of them on target, offering the greater accuracy in front of goal.

Those margins mattered. Newcastle had enough of the ball and enough attempts to pursue an equaliser, but could not turn either into a goal. Everton protected their advantage through the remainder of the second half and a lengthy period of added time.

Late dismissal compounds Newcastle’s frustration

The closing stages brought a flurry of disciplinary action. Ramsey was booked in the sixth minute of stoppage time and received a red card two minutes later. Brennan Johnson and Fabian Schär were then booked in the ninth added minute before Everton’s victory was confirmed.

For Everton, the combination of Barry’s decisive contribution and a clean sheet made this a productive away trip. For Newcastle, the clearest concern was the gap between their volume of attempts and the limited number that tested the opposition goalkeeper.

Everton next face Coventry City on Friday, November 6, at 12:00 PM PST. Newcastle return to action against Fulham on Saturday, November 7, at 7:00 AM PST.
