Chelsea turned a goalless interval into three Premier League points with a 2–0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Morgan Rogers broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, before Cole Palmer’s 64th-minute penalty doubled the advantage shortly after United lost Lisandro Martínez to a red card.

It was a damaging afternoon for the visitors, whose hopes of recovering from the opening goal were undermined by a decisive spell midway through the second half. Chelsea emerged with a clean sheet and a deserved victory, having finished with the greater share of possession and more attempts on target.

Rogers breaks the deadlock

Neither side found a breakthrough before half-time, leaving the fixture finely balanced at 0–0. United remained in contention for a result, but that balance shifted five minutes after the restart when Rogers struck in the 50th minute to put Chelsea ahead.

The opening goal gave the hosts the advantage; the next major incidents left United facing a considerably steeper climb. Martínez was booked in the 59th minute and then shown a red card in the 63rd, reducing the visitors to 10 players.

Palmer converted from the penalty spot in the 64th minute, putting Chelsea two goals clear just one minute after the dismissal. With a numerical advantage as well, the hosts were firmly placed to take all three points.

Chelsea’s advantage reflected in the numbers

Across the full match, Chelsea registered 18 attempts to United’s 12 and led the shots-on-target count 9–5. Their 58.7% possession and eight corners, compared with United’s seven, added further weight to the home side’s performance.

United did carry an attacking threat, but their five attempts on target produced no breakthrough. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders finished with a clean sheet as the hosts preserved their two-goal cushion through an extended period of stoppage time.

Discipline compounded United’s difficulties. They committed 20 fouls to Chelsea’s eight, with Harry Maguire, Kobbie Mainoo, Bryan Mbeumo and Joshua Zirkzee also booked. Penders received Chelsea’s only yellow card in the third minute of added time.

More pressure on United before Villa fixture

The defeat adds to the pressure surrounding United manager Carrick, with the visitors’ listed five-match form showing four losses and one draw. For Chelsea, the afternoon brought a home victory built on two decisive second-half goals and a shutout.

Both clubs return to Premier League action on Sunday, November 8. Chelsea face Sunderland at 6:00 AM PST, before Manchester United take on Aston Villa at 8:30 AM PST.
