Colorado Rapids 1-0 Real Salt Lake
Reggie Cannon’s second-half header proved the difference as Colorado Rapids claimed a hard-earned 1-0 Rocky Mountain victory over Real Salt Lake at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Colorado found the breakthrough in the 58th minute. Cannon surged forward from right back and met the delivery with a decisive header, steering home the only goal of a match the Rapids increasingly controlled.
The hosts had been the more assertive side throughout, finishing with 64.3 percent possession, 14 shots and four efforts on target. Their seven corners also reflected sustained pressure around the Salt Lake penalty area, while the visitors struggled to establish attacking rhythm and failed to register a shot on target from four attempts.
The first half was tight and physical rather than free-flowing. Colorado’s Hamzat Ojediran was booked in the 14th minute, while Rob Holding saw yellow four minutes after the restart. Real Salt Lake’s Aiden Hezarkhani was cautioned in the 53rd minute as the edge in the contest continued to build.
Cannon’s 58th-minute goal changed the complexion of the fixture, giving the Rapids a lead to protect while forcing Salt Lake to take greater risks. The visitors could not turn that urgency into a clear opening, however, and discipline became an issue late on. Morgan Guilavogui, Noel Caliskan, Colin Guske and Juan Arias were all booked for Real Salt Lake, while Colorado’s Miguel Navarro received a stoppage-time yellow card.
Colorado saw out seven minutes of added time with composure to secure the clean sheet and three valuable MLS points. The Rapids next host Columbus Crew on September 5, while Real Salt Lake will look to respond away to LAFC on the same day.
