San Diego FC and Houston Dynamo FC traded comebacks in a dramatic 3-3 MLS draw at Snapdragon Stadium on Wednesday, October 14, with Gabriel Pirani’s 86th-minute equalizer ensuring the hosts took a point from a fixture they had initially threatened to run away with.
San Diego led through Anders Dreyer’s penalty in the 20th minute and Cédric Bakambu’s goal in the 22nd. Houston responded with three goals before halftime: Guilherme Augusto struck in the 24th and 37th minutes, either side of Mateusz Bogusz’s 33rd-minute equalizer, to turn a two-goal deficit into a 3-2 lead.
Five goals in a breathtaking first-half burst
The opening breakthrough came when Dreyer converted from the penalty spot in the 20th minute. Bakambu doubled San Diego’s advantage just two minutes later, putting the home side firmly in command of the early goal exchanges.
That control proved fleeting. Guilherme Augusto pulled Houston back into contention in the 24th minute, cutting the deficit almost immediately and beginning a remarkable turnaround.
Bogusz brought the visitors level in the 33rd minute before Guilherme Augusto completed his brace with a volley in the 37th. In just 13 minutes, Houston had transformed a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 advantage, taking the lead into the interval after a five-goal spell that showcased both sides’ attacking threat.
San Diego find a late response
The second half brought a long pause in the scoring, but Houston could not quite protect their narrow lead. Pirani delivered the decisive reply in the 86th minute, restoring parity and securing San Diego’s share of the points.
The hosts finished with 61.5 percent possession, a 17-10 advantage in attempts and six shots on target to Houston’s three. They also won 10 corners to the visitors’ three. Houston, however, made their accuracy count: all three of their efforts on target produced goals.
The final whistle confirmed a draw shaped by resilience on both sides. Houston recovered impressively from an early two-goal setback, while San Diego found a late answer after surrendering their lead.
