Debinha delivered a second-half hat-trick as Kansas City Current defeated Bay FC 5–1 at CPKC Stadium on Saturday, October 3, turning a level National Women’s Soccer League fixture into an emphatic home victory.
Karlie Lema gave Bay FC the lead in the fourth minute, but Haley Hopkins equalized in the 24th. With the sides tied 1–1 at halftime, Debinha transformed the match with goals in the 46th, 53rd and 75th minutes before Temwa Chawinga added Kansas City’s fifth in the 89th.
Bay strike early, Hopkins brings Current level
Bay FC made the ideal start when Lema found the net in the fourth minute, putting the visitors ahead before the match had settled.
Kansas City’s response came through Hopkins in the 24th minute. Her equalizer erased Bay’s early advantage and ensured the teams went into the interval on level terms, with the outcome still firmly in the balance.
Debinha takes charge after the restart
The decisive shift arrived immediately after halftime. Debinha put Kansas City ahead in the 46th minute, then headed home in the 53rd to establish a two-goal cushion.
Having turned 1–1 into 3–1 within the opening eight minutes of the second half, the Current had seized control of the result. Debinha completed her hat-trick with another header in the 75th minute, making it 4–1 and putting the fixture beyond Bay’s reach.
Chawinga supplied the final flourish in the 89th minute, completing a four-goal second half for Kansas City and sealing the 5–1 victory.
Attacking output tells the story
Possession was almost evenly divided, with Bay FC holding 50.5 percent to Kansas City’s 49.5 percent, but the hosts produced considerably more threat. The Current registered 24 shots to Bay’s 12 and put 10 on target compared with the visitors’ four.
Kansas City also won 12 corners to Bay’s two. Those figures underline the distinction between having the ball and turning it into attacking opportunities: the Current generated more chances and made their second-half advantage count.
For Bay, Lema’s fourth-minute opener offered an encouraging beginning, but the visitors could not build on it. For Kansas City, Debinha’s three-goal burst was the defining contribution in a commanding comeback.
