San Diego Wave FC made their early advantage count on Friday, October 2, earning a 2–1 National Women’s Soccer League victory over Orlando Pride at Inter&Co Stadium. Lia Godfrey’s fourth-minute opener and Gia Corley’s 22nd-minute goal gave the visitors a two-goal cushion before Barbra Banda’s 52nd-minute penalty brought Orlando back into contention.
The Pride could not find the equalizer, leaving San Diego with all three points after a fixture that extended through 13 minutes of second-half stoppage time.
Godfrey and Corley put the Wave in command
San Diego wasted little time establishing a foothold. Godfrey opened the scoring in the fourth minute, immediately putting Orlando on the back foot on their own pitch.
Corley doubled the advantage in the 22nd minute, giving the Wave breathing room and leaving the hosts with a substantial deficit to overturn. San Diego reached halftime 2–0 ahead, with their early goals ultimately proving decisive.
Banda’s penalty gives Orlando hope
Orlando found a route back into the match seven minutes after the restart. Banda converted from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute to reduce the deficit to 2–1, putting a draw within reach with much of the second half still to play.
That was as close as the Pride came on the final tally. San Diego protected their remaining advantage through the closing stages and a lengthy spell of added time. Orlando’s Oihane Hernández received a yellow card in the 91st minute, followed by Banda in the 97th, before the visitors secured the victory.
San Diego’s edge reflected in the numbers
The Wave finished with 61.1 percent possession and outshot Orlando 15–11. Their advantage was more pronounced in efforts on target, where they led 6–3, while they also earned six corners to the Pride’s two.
Those figures underline San Diego’s greater share of the ball and attacking output, although Banda’s penalty ensured the result remained in the balance. For Orlando, winning the second half 1–0 was not enough to undo the damage inflicted before the interval.
