Atlanta United FC left Providence Park with all three points on Saturday night, edging the Portland Timbers 1-0 behind Alexey Miranchuk’s decisive first-half finish.
Miranchuk scored the only goal of the match in the 28th minute, giving Atlanta a lead they protected through a demanding second half in Portland. The visitors were made to defend for long stretches, but their compact resistance and timely work without the ball proved enough to see out a valuable road result.
Miranchuk makes the difference
The contest was still finely balanced when Miranchuk found the breakthrough in the 28th minute. The Atlanta midfielder’s goal gave his side a 1-0 halftime advantage and changed the rhythm of the fixture, forcing Portland to take more initiative after the interval.
Portland had the larger share of possession, finishing at 53.2 percent, and generated considerably more attempts. The Timbers recorded 21 shots and five corners, compared with Atlanta’s 10 shots and three corners, but could not turn that territorial pressure into an equaliser. Both teams put three efforts on target.
Atlanta stand firm after the break
The second half produced no further goals as Atlanta absorbed Portland’s pressure and managed the narrow margin effectively. Tristan Muyumba was booked in the 64th minute as the visitors battled to preserve their lead, while Portland’s Diego Chara and Joel Waterman had already gone into the book in the first half. Giuliano Galoppo was also cautioned for Atlanta in first-half stoppage time.
For the Timbers, it was a frustrating night in front of their home support: plenty of possession, a clear edge in shot volume, but no finishing touch. Atlanta, meanwhile, made their moment count through Miranchuk and defended the clean sheet to the final whistle.

Portland Timbers return to MLS action on Saturday, September 26, when they host San Jose Earthquakes. Atlanta United FC are also back in action that day, travelling to face New York City FC.
