Leeds United produced a ruthless Elland Road display to beat Newcastle United 4-1 in the Premier League on Monday night, turning a tight opening half-hour into a commanding victory with three goals before the interval.

The home side were clinical when their opportunities arrived, while Newcastle were left to rue a damaging spell in which the match slipped rapidly from their grasp. Leeds had the edge in possession with 50.7 per cent and made their attacking pressure count, registering 15 shots and six on target.

Leeds strike three times before the break

The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute in unfortunate fashion for Newcastle. Lewis Miley turned the ball into his own net, handing Leeds a lead that immediately lifted the atmosphere among the 36,693 supporters at Elland Road.

Two minutes later, Leeds doubled their advantage. Jayden Bogle rose to score a header in the 34th minute, punishing Newcastle again and putting the hosts firmly in control.

Newcastle had little time to recover before Dominic Calvert-Lewin added a third in first-half stoppage time. The striker found the net in the 45+1st minute, completing a devastating spell and sending Leeds into the interval with a 3-0 lead.

Okafor seals convincing success

Newcastle needed an immediate response after the restart, but Leeds continued to carry the greater threat. Noah Okafor made the result emphatic in the 59th minute, scoring Leeds’ fourth goal of the match to cap an assured attacking performance.

The visitors did manage a late consolation when substitute Bazoumana Touré scored in the 90th minute, but it did little to alter the verdict on a fixture dominated by Leeds during the decisive moments.

Leeds created more frequently and more effectively, producing 10 shot assists to Newcastle’s seven. Both sides won five corners, but Newcastle’s 13 fouls compared with Leeds’ eight reflected a frustrating evening for the visitors, who could not contain the home side once the deadlock was broken.

What it means

The result moves Leeds United to a 2-2-0 league record, while Newcastle United fall to 1-2-1. Leeds will look to carry the momentum into Saturday’s home fixture against Crystal Palace. Newcastle, meanwhile, must regroup before travelling to face Hull City on the same day.
