Angel City FC left Louisville with a valuable 2-0 NWSL win on Saturday, with Evelyn Shores delivering both goals in a decisive second-half display at Lynn Family Stadium.
After a goalless first half, Angel City found the breakthrough in the 69th minute through Shores. The left-back’s finish gave the visitors the reward their greater control of possession had been building toward and changed the complexion of a tight match in front of 5,782 supporters.
Racing Louisville had competed well through the opening 45 minutes and created enough pressure to keep the contest level, but Angel City increasingly dictated the tempo after the interval. The visitors finished with 61.1 percent possession, 14 shots and four efforts on target, compared with Louisville’s 10 shots and two on target.
Louisville pushed to find a late response, having matched Angel City with five corners apiece, but the visitors remained disciplined. Macey Hodge was booked for Racing in the 38th minute, while Angel City’s Sveindís Jónsdóttir saw yellow in the 86th minute.
Shores made certain of the points in the first minute of stoppage time, scoring again at 90’+1′ to seal the 2-0 result and complete a memorable brace from defence.
The victory moves Angel City to a 9-5-8 record, while Racing Louisville drop to 7-2-14. Racing Louisville next host Gotham FC on Friday, September 11, while Angel City return home to face Denver Summit FC later that day.
