Hull City delivered a stirring early statement at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, beating Manchester United 2-0 after a disciplined, ruthless first-half display in the Premier League.

Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute before Nobel Mendy doubled the advantage with a header in the 38th minute. Those two decisive moments gave Hull a lead they protected with composure through a second half dominated by United possession but short on a breakthrough.

Manchester United controlled 71.7 per cent of the ball and generated 21 shots to Hull’s eight, while also winning six corners to the hosts’ one. Yet Hull made their opportunities count, putting four of their eight attempts on target and scoring twice before the interval.

Ajayi’s 17th-minute goal gave the home supporters an ideal start and placed the visitors under immediate pressure. United attempted to settle into their passing rhythm, but Hull remained compact and competitive, with Patrick Dorgu booked in the 34th minute as frustration began to show.

The defining second goal arrived four minutes later. Mendy rose to head home in the 38th minute, turning Hull’s promising opening into a commanding 2-0 half-time lead. Matt Crooks was cautioned in the 42nd minute as the hosts continued to contest every duel before the break.

United increased the pressure after half-time and registered five shots on target across the match, but Hull’s defensive organisation held firm. The visitors created more shooting situations and recorded 18 shot assists, compared with Hull’s five, but lacked the clinical final touch required to alter the result.

For Hull, it was a memorable victory built on efficiency in both penalty areas. With attention around United heightened following reports of their pursuit of Carlos Baleba, this was instead an afternoon in which Hull’s defenders and their first-half finishers seized the spotlight.

Hull City next face Coventry City on Saturday, August 29, while Manchester United will look to respond away to Ipswich Town on Sunday, August 30.
