Austin FC and Philadelphia Union had to settle for a point apiece after an eventful early burst produced all the goals in a 1-1 MLS draw at Q2 Stadium on Saturday night.
Philadelphia struck first through Cavan Sullivan in the 18th minute. The Union midfielder rose to convert a header and give the visitors an early advantage in Austin.
That lead lasted only three minutes. Austin responded immediately from a set-piece situation, with defender Brendan Hines-Ike heading home in the 21st minute to restore parity and lift the home support.
The first half ended level at 1-1, and despite both sides finding avenues to threaten after the interval, neither could provide the decisive finishing touch. Austin carried a slight edge in possession, 55.1% to 44.9%, and registered 12 shots, including six on target. Philadelphia produced nine attempts and put three on target, while both teams earned six corners.
The contest retained its bite throughout. Philadelphia’s Jesús Bueno and Neil Pierre were booked before the break, while Austin’s Ervin Torres saw yellow deep into stoppage time. Neither side, however, could turn late pressure into a winner.
It was a legitimate share of the points in a balanced fixture: Philadelphia showed their aerial threat through Sullivan’s opener, while Austin demonstrated their resilience with Hines-Ike’s rapid reply. Austin FC next host the Portland Timbers on August 29, while Philadelphia Union return home to face Red Bull New York on the same day.
