Atlanta United FC produced a stirring second-half comeback to defeat Red Bull New York 2-1 in Major League Soccer on Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Emil Forsberg gave the visitors a sixth-minute lead, but Tristan Muyumba levelled in the 69th minute before Fafà Picault headed home the decisive goal in the 82nd minute.
Red Bull New York made the sharper start and were rewarded almost immediately. Forsberg struck in the 6th minute to put the visitors in front, giving them a 1-0 advantage at the interval.
Atlanta, however, grew into the match after the break. Despite seeing less of the ball, with Red Bull New York holding 59.8 percent possession, the home side found greater purpose in the final third. Atlanta finished with 10 shots and three on target, making their opportunities count when the fixture turned.
Muyumba delivered the breakthrough in the 69th minute, bringing Atlanta level and changing the momentum inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The hosts then completed the turnaround 13 minutes later when Picault rose to score with a header in the 82nd minute.
Red Bull New York pressed for a late response, backed by seven corners and 11 total shots, but Atlanta’s defence held firm through nine minutes of added time. The closing stages were suitably tense, with Picault booked shortly after his winner and Atlanta substitute Mohammed Sofo shown a yellow card in stoppage time.
The result is a valuable home victory for Atlanta United, whose second-half resilience turned an early setback into a memorable 2-1 MLS win. For Red Bull New York, Forsberg’s early goal was not enough to prevent a frustrating defeat after a match in which they controlled more possession but could not find a late equaliser.
