Columbus Crew turned the Hell Is Real fixture on its head Saturday night, recovering from an early setback to claim a 2-1 home victory over FC Cincinnati at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Major League Soccer.

FC Cincinnati struck first in the 9th minute when Kévin Denkey found the net, giving the visitors exactly the sort of start they wanted in a tense rivalry fixture. Cincinnati were sharp early and looked capable of controlling the tempo, but Columbus gradually settled into the match and began to push the visitors deeper.

The Crew’s pressure finally told in the 41st minute. Jamal Thiaré rose to score with a header, bringing Columbus level at 1-1 and swinging momentum firmly toward the home side before the interval.

That momentum became a lead deep into first-half stoppage time. In the 45’+6′ minute, Dániel Gazdag kept his composure from the penalty spot and converted to put Columbus ahead 2-1. It was a massive moment in the narrative of the match, completing a first-half turnaround after Denkey’s opener had threatened to tilt the night Cincinnati’s way.

The second half did not produce another goal, but it carried plenty of edge. Columbus managed the match well after the break, finishing with 53 percent possession, 13 total shots and six efforts on target. Cincinnati remained dangerous, posting 12 shots and five on target, but the Crew back line and goalkeeper did enough to preserve the narrow advantage.

There was another flashpoint late on when Gerardo Valenzuela was sent off for FC Cincinnati in the 90’+4′ minute, making the visitors’ late push even more difficult. Matt Miazga had also gone into the book in the 66th minute as the intensity of the fixture continued to rise.

In the end, the decisive stretch came before halftime. Denkey’s 9th-minute goal gave Cincinnati hope of an away result, but Thiaré’s 41st-minute equalizer and Gazdag’s 45’+6′ penalty gave Columbus the platform to see out an important rivalry win.

For the Crew, this was a mature performance as much as a dramatic one: absorb the early blow, respond with quality, then show enough control and resilience to close the door. For Cincinnati, the early promise was real, but they could not find the second-half breakthrough needed to rescue the fixture.
