Boston Legacy FC made their early breakthrough stand up on Saturday night, defeating Kansas City Current 1-0 in National Women’s Soccer League action at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
The decisive moment arrived in the 18th minute when Aïssata Traoré found the net to give Boston the lead. It was the only goal of the match, but it capped a bright opening spell from the home side, who were the sharper team in the first half and carried that advantage into the interval with a 1-0 lead.
Boston finished with 51.5 percent possession and outshot Kansas City 13-9, a reflection of a match in which the hosts were able to create the slightly better openings even if clear-cut chances remained at a premium. Boston put just two efforts on target, but Traoré’s finish at 18′ proved clinical enough to separate the sides.
Kansas City pushed for a response after the break and ended the night with four shots on target, twice as many as Boston, but the visitors could not find the final touch. The Current also earned five corners to Boston’s four and had spells of pressure in the second half, yet the home back line held firm when it mattered most.
The match had a growing edge as it wore on. Bárbara Olivieri went into the book for Boston at 45′, while Lo’eau LaBonta was cautioned for Kansas City at 83′. Deep into stoppage time, Boston’s Ella Stevens was shown a red card at 90’+6′, ensuring a nervy finish as the hosts had to see out the closing moments with 10 players.
They did exactly that. Boston protected their narrow advantage through a tense final stretch and claimed a valuable three points in front of an announced crowd of 8,939. For Kansas City, it was a frustrating evening in which their second-half pressure and four shots on target produced no reward.
In the end, Traoré’s 18th-minute goal was the difference in a disciplined and determined Boston performance, one that gave the home supporters plenty to celebrate at full time.
