Utah Royals made home advantage count on Sunday night, beating Racing Louisville FC 2-1 at America First Field in Sandy, Utah, thanks to a decisive 77th-minute goal from Mina Tanaka.
The Royals were the sharper side for long stretches and their pressure told in the 22nd minute, when Lauren Milliet turned the ball into her own net to hand the hosts a 1-0 lead. It was an unfortunate moment for Racing Louisville, but one that reflected Utah’s early territorial control as they pushed the visitors back and forced mistakes in dangerous areas.
Utah carried that advantage into the interval and looked the more comfortable team, finishing the night with 64.8 percent possession, 18 total shots and eight corners. Racing Louisville, though, stayed in the fixture and waited for an opening.
That opening arrived in the 68th minute when Kayla Fischer brought the visitors level at 1-1, punishing Utah with a well-timed equaliser and giving Racing Louisville renewed belief. For a brief spell, the momentum swung and the Royals suddenly had a real test on their hands.
But the response from the home side was swift and telling. Just nine minutes later, Tanaka restored Utah’s lead with the goal that ultimately settled the contest in the 77th minute. It was the decisive attacking moment of the night, and it ensured the Royals would turn their overall control into all three points.
Racing Louisville pushed to find another leveller late on, but Utah saw out the closing stages to secure a valuable result. The visitors finished with only 35.2 percent possession and managed just two shots on target, while Utah’s ability to keep the ball and sustain pressure proved the difference over the full 90 minutes.
The win lifts the Royals to 6-2-2 on the season and extends their impressive form, while Racing Louisville fall to 2-1-6 after another narrow defeat. In front of an attendance of 6,514, Utah delivered a performance with both control and resilience, and Tanaka’s late intervention gave the home supporters the finish they wanted.
