Nottingham Forest produced one of their sharpest away displays of the Premier League season on Friday night, dismantling Sunderland 5-0 at the Stadium of Light to take a huge step away from danger at the bottom of the table.

The final margin was emphatic, but the real damage was done in a devastating first-half spell. Forest struck five times in all, with Sunderland undone first by misfortune and then by a wave of clinical attacking football that left the home side reeling long before the interval.

Forest moved in front on 17 minutes when Trai Hume turned the ball into his own net, handing the visitors an early breakthrough and setting the tone for a brutal evening on Wearside. From there, Forest sensed vulnerability and attacked with conviction.

Chris Wood doubled the lead on 31 minutes, finishing off a slick Forest move to make it 2-0. Just three minutes later, Morgan Gibbs-White added a third on 34 minutes, capping an influential display with a goal of his own as Forest’s attacking combinations repeatedly opened up the Sunderland back line.

The contest was effectively over by 37 minutes when Igor Jesus got in on the act, sweeping home Forest’s fourth of the night to complete a remarkable burst of three goals in six first-half minutes. At 4-0 down by halftime, Sunderland were left staring at an impossible task.

To their credit, the home side did see more of the ball after the restart and finished with 61.2 percent possession, while also posting 14 total shots to Forest’s 10. But those numbers told only part of the story. Forest were far more efficient in both boxes, putting six shots on target and converting five of them, while Sunderland could not find a route past the visiting defence despite recording four efforts on target.

There was a scrappier edge to the second half, with bookings for Mouhamadou Diarra on 51 minutes and Granit Xhaka on 75 minutes for Sunderland, while Forest saw Nicolás Domínguez booked on 51 minutes, Elliot Anderson on 58 minutes, Igor Jesus on 60 minutes, Neco Williams on 69 minutes and Ryan Yates on 76 minutes. But the result was never in doubt.

Forest still had time to add further gloss in stoppage time. Elliot Anderson wrapped up the rout on 90+5 minutes, driving home the fifth goal to underline the visitors’ dominance and complete a miserable night for Sunderland supporters.

For Forest, this was a result built on incision, composure and ruthless finishing, with Gibbs-White at the heart of the best attacking moments and Wood again providing a reliable focal point. For Sunderland, the possession and shot count offered little consolation after a first half in which the fixture slipped completely out of their grasp.

By full time, the away end had plenty to celebrate. Forest left the Stadium of Light with three valuable points, five goals, and fresh belief that survival is firmly within reach.

Goal scorers: Trai Hume (own goal, 17′), Chris Wood (31′), Morgan Gibbs-White (34′), Igor Jesus (37′), Elliot Anderson (90’+5′).
